Wulstan Atkins Memorial Lecture

John McCabe, piano

Lecture-recital on Haydn piano sonatas.

Haydn's piano sonatas range from his earliest works to his later years and his second visit to London in 1794/5. They give a good overview of his development as a composer, and the originality of his approach to this genre.

Stephen Johnson on Haydn

Joseph Haydn has been justly described as 'the most neglected of all the truly great composers'. While a handful of works have always been cherished, the scale and breadth of his originality still seems to be appreciated by relatively few. Stephen Johnson looks closely at some of Haydn's finest and most characteristic works, and argues that without his pioneering example the achievements of Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahmsand even Wagner might have been profoundly different.
