New Original Works Festival 2010, Week Two

Christine Marie and ensemble: Ground to Cloud

Seamlessly integrating projected shadows, live actors and an innovative sound score, Christine Marie and her collaborators draw on the history of electric light to manifest a flickering world of natural phenomena and human intervention. Large-scale imagery from simple handheld lights and props takes on mythological proportions as scientific discovery, religious folklore and magical trickery blend into an incandescent work of expressionist theater.

'Christine Marie's shadow design conjures a literal ocean of surprise.' - Los Angeles Times

Rae Shao-Lan Blum and Tashi Wada: Systems of Us

Through interdependent movement and musical scores, three dancers and five musicians build a work of spontaneous elegance as they delve into the complexities of intimacy interrupted. Choreographer Rae Shao-Lan Blum and composer Tashi Wada lay out intersecting compositions that weave repetition, disruption and transformation into a vigorous exploration of the nuanced negotiations that keep relationships alive.

'Her sensitivity to phrasing creates an image of raw emotion, with contortion and line functioning as feeling.' -The Dance Insider

Raphael Xavier: Black Canvas

Raphael Xavier is a finely tuned master of Breaking whose continued innovation has led the vanguard of hip-hop dance theater, first as a member of Rennie Harris Puremovement, then as choreographer and co-founder of olive Dance Theatre. In Black Canvas, Xavier shifts the rhythms of Rap and propels narratives through Breaking to draw parallels between the performer’s body, which is inscribed by life’s experiences, and the stage itself.

'Xavier abstracts the Hip-Hop vocabulary, loosening it from its usual musical moornings.' - Dance Magazine

Free to Dream

NEW YORK, NY – On August 2, 2010, at 7:00 PM and 9:30 PM, take a musical road trip across the country in Free to Dream, an evening devoted to the songs of Katsaros and Schermerhorn at Joe’s Pub. Featuring an all-star Broadway cast including Rent star Anthony Rapp, Avenue Q’s John Tartaglia and Stephanie D’Abruzzo, Broadway veteran Liz Callaway and award-winning vocalist Karen Mason, Free to Dream showcases the people and places that make up the fabric of America; from country, rock and pop, to swing and the blues. Proceeds from Free to Dream benefit The New York Pops’ education programs, which bring music to thousands of public schoolchildren across the five boroughs of New York City. The evening will be hosted by The New York Pops Music Director Steven Reineke, and will feature the Camp Broadway Kids, as well as the voice of Willard Scott as ‘DJ Sam’.

David Chesky: 'The Pig, The Farmer, and The Artist': An adult opera satire about art, music and culture

NYC Fringe Festival

This opera is a biting satire on our contemporary world. It attacks our present-day cultural malaise tangentially, making use of 'the pig' allegorically, and, in doing so, mocks and pokes cruel fun at the inverted values of our materialistic society. In the tradition of Gulliver's Travels, the composer has attempted to break through our world's impoverished consciousness and lay bare society's frantic but ultimately empty pursuit at meaning. It features a cast of 10 singers with a 10-piece chamber orchestra.
