When Richard Wagner sketched his ideas for a festival in 1850, his initial thoughts were of a venue in Zurich or Weimar, and later Munich. Twenty years later Hans Richter drew him to a vacant opera house in the city of Bayreuth. Wagner liked the city, but the building was unsuitable for performances of The Ring. It took until 13 August 1876, when a new opera house had finally been built, for the first Bayreuth Festival to begin.
In 2019 there will be performances of Tannhäuser, Lohengrin, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Parsifal and Tristan und Isolde.
