The accordion is the featured instrument in this performance by the virtuoso Miloš Milivojevic — “A hurricane of imaginative invention” (Hilary Finch, The Times). Presenting the accordion as a truly global instrument, Milivojevic takes us from Astor Piazzolla’s ever-popular Milonga del Angel to lesser known composers such as Franck Angelis, Viaceslav Semenov and Viktor Vlasov. A world premiere from Robert Percy complete the set from this exceptional musician.

Leo Chadburn’s new work for piano trio and electronics is set amongst chamber repertoire both new and old. The programme will showcase each instrument in the piano trio, from the softly-evolving cello melody in Philip Glass’ Orbit to the interaction of violin and piano in Arvo Pärt’s poignant Spiegel im Spiegel.

Emma Ruth Richards: new work (William Alwyn Foundation commission, first performance)
Bernstein: Chichester Psalms
Vaughan Williams: Dona nobis pacem

Written in 1965, Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, with its brass, harps and exquisite solo for boy treble, provides an exhilarating invocation of the composer’s hopes for brotherhood and peace, sentiments mirrored by Vaughan Williams impassioned Dona nobis pacem. The world-renowned King’s College Choir of Cambridge joins Britten Sinfonia for performances of both works, conducted by Stephen Cleobury.

The concert opens with the world premiere of a new work by Emma-Ruth Richards, directed by Britten Sinfonia leader Jacqueline Shave. You can help support Emma-Ruth Richards’ new commission through our Musically Gifted campaign.

From its opening clarinet glissando Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue has become synonymous with 1920s America and its popularity continues to this day. Performed here in the original jazz band arrangement with acclaimed pianist Jeremy Denk the work is paired with Stravinsky’s rhythmically complex Concerto for piano and wind. Both works explore rhythm from the syncopated cadenzas in Stravinsky to the abundant use of dance and ragtime rhythms in Gershwin.
