Lawrence Durkin (Cello) is currently undertaking post-graduate studies with Leonid Gorokhov at the Royal College of Music. He is a scholar supported by the Constant and Kit Lambert Award, Jacqueline Ward Award and the Astor Award. Last year, he achieved a First Class Honours in his BMus studies with Melissa Phelps and Moray Welsh receiving the highest cello mark for his Final Recital. He has also participated in masterclasses with Alexander Baillie, Steven Doane, Johannes Goritzki, Louise Hopkins and Richard Lester.

In June 2003 he made his concerto debut performing Haydn’s Concerto in C with the London Pro Arte Orchestra. Since then he has performed across the U.K as a soloist and chamber musician notably with the Carressi String Trio, Harpham Quartet and the Prince Consort Ensemble with whom he has recently completed a tour of the USA. He has performed for the HRH Prince of Wales, Princess Alexandra, Tony Blair and other Cabinet members.

Lawrence has been Principal cello of the St. Cecilia Orchestra, RCM Sinfonietta and Hertfordshire County Youth Orchestra. Since July 2004, he has been Artist in Residence at the Performing Arts Institute Summer Program at Wyoming Seminary, Pennsylvania USA. Last summer, he also attended the Dartington International Summer School and played with members of Quatour Diotoma.

For the last two years, he has been involved in the VaCo chamber courses providing musical experiences for young and old in Yorkshire and other northern counties. These opportunities have been invaluable in extending and complementing his college studies. Lawrence plays on a cello made in Paris by Charles Buthod circa 1880.
