Rossini: The Barber of Seville

The Golden Age of the silent movie in the 1910s and 1920s is the main source of inspiration for prizewinning theatre director Martin Lyngbo's debut as opera director.

True to the feel of the silent movies, this production promises speed and chaos as the young count tries to capture the heart of his beloved Rosina and spirit her away from her over-ambitious guardian, Don Bartolo.

In Martin Lyngbo's interpretation, Il barbiere di Siviglia becomes a tale of empathy and humanity in an age of tyranny, where everyone has their own agenda. There will be chaos and love, vengeance and celebration, pride and shame, feast and failure accompanied by laughter, smiles, anger and irritation.

Thomas Adès: The Exterminating Angel

After a festive evening in the Opera, a group of jet setters gather for a later dinner party. But something is terribly wrong: A curse seems to have been cast on the party, making it impossible for anyone to leave the house. Soon, desperation sets in, and the dinner escalates into a nightmarish fight for survival.

The Exterminating Angel is inspired by Luis Buñuel's surrealistic cult film classic from 1962. An extra layer is added to Buñuel's universe with Thomas Adès' seductive musical universe, which abounds with sounds of musical masters of the past, from Wagner and Mussorgsky to Bartók, Nielsen, Ravel and Shostakovich and with a hint of Stravinsky's wild abandon. The piece's no fewer than twenty-two characters emphasize the immensity of its universe, set to the music of one of the most notable composers of our time.

The Exterminating Angel had its world premiere at the 2016 Salzburg Festival and is a coproduction between the Salzburg Festival, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Royal Danish Opera.

Britten Sinfonia: Easter Voices

Ben Goldscheider, horn
Britten Sinfonia Voices
Eamonn Dougan, conductor

Mozart: Venite populi
Stravinsky: Fanfare for a New Theater
Mozart: Missa Brevis in F, K192
Stravinsky: Pater noster, Ave Maria
Esa-Pekka Salonen: Concert etude for solo horn
Stravinsky: Mass

The talents of the acclaimed Britten Sinfonia Voices, conducted by Eamonn Dougan, are showcased in a special Easter concert featuring two masses written 170 years apart. Stravinsky considered function as important as form and composed his Mass, which many consider his finest religious work, for church use, writing 'religious music without religion is almost always vulgar'. The Mass features gorgeous harmonic colours, animating the text of the Roman Catholic liturgy with voice, wind and brass.

In the run-up to writing his own Mass, Stravinsky stumbled across a handful of Mozartís masses in a Los Angeles bookshop; Britten Sinfoniaís Easter celebration is completed by Mozartís beautiful Missa Brevis.
