Festival of Songs

International Choir Festival of Songs Olomouc was established in 1972 under the name Festival of Children's Choirs Olomouc. Since its beginning, the festival has been annually held by a traditional regional project. The name Festival of Songs came to be in 1977; at first it used to be strictly a platform for get-togethers of children's choirs through shows and concerts. In 1987, the international singing competition Iuventus Mundi Cantant saw the light of day; later, in 2002, it was restructured and renamed as international singing choir competition Mundi Cantant. Since 1987, the competition has been open to all categories of choirs.

Donizetti: Il Paria

A rare chance to hear Il Paria, one of Donizetti’s most innovative and daring scores, conducted by Sir Mark Elder with Britten Sinfonia.

Opera Rara is known internationally for bringing rare and neglected operas vividly back to life. Working in partnership with Britten Sinfonia, and featuring acclaimed Russian coloratura soprano Albina Shagimuratova, Opera Rara present Donizetti’s Il Paria, a work that brings a new exotic colour to Italian opera of the period, inspired by its setting in ancient India.

Salzburg Whitsun Festival

Cecilia Bartoli: 'I will pay homage to the castrati at the 2019 Salzburg Whitsun Festival. Being a festival of music, I would also like to focus on the moment of artistic climax and, in a way, the beginning of the end of the castrato craze in classical music history. I hope to show how castrati made such a huge impact on music lovers of the day, through their music and their singing.'

Orlando Chamber Choir presents an all-sensory summer concert with the fragrance of flowers and the sound of Franco-Flemish Renaissance gardens. Our musical plantsmen include Antoine Brumel, Jacobus Clemens non Papa, Cipriano de Rore and Orlando di Lasso, all of whom captured melodies from the biblical gardens of the Song of Songs. There will be secular flora too – polyphony about roses, lilies, vines and other greenery – with Josquin des Prez’ well-known cricket hiding amidst the leaves. Clément Janequin adds birdsong to this musical garden, with singers mimicking starlings, blackbirds and the occasional nightingale. To root this oasis in today’s Central London, we have seeded two contemporary garden-inspired compositions by Janet Wheeler, ready to bloom on the concert day. Orlando’s Garden of Delights is open from 19:00 and, to cater for all senses, will conclude with a communal picnic.
