This will be the first performance of one of Mercadante’s most daring and innovative scores since its Naples premiere in 1842. Restored from its original manuscript, Il proscritto weaves a tragic tale of lost love and political treachery during the rule of Oliver Cromwell. In over 50 years of operatic archeology, Opera Rara’s mission has been to rediscover and restore neglected works of the highest quality, giving them new life through studio recordings and live performance. This concert will present Opera Rara’s 46th restoration of a forgotten work from opera’s glorious past. |

7.30pm Sheldonian Theatre Broad Street Oxford OX1 3AZ United Kingdom Details: Mollie Lewis Web site +441865980980 £48 £38 £28 £15 (students £5) | Beethoven's Mass in C major Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra Eilana Lappalainen soprano* Soloists to be announced Crouch End Festival Chorus David Temple chorus director Peter Tiboris conductor Beethoven Die Weihe des Hauses Overture, Op. 124 Beethoven Ah! perfido, Op. 65* Beethoven Mass in C major, Op. 86 Beethoven's primary concern in his radiant Mass in C major was 'not God or princes, but the human being entering the church.' A combination of spirituality and humanity can be felt in almost every bar of the piece, which treated the text and sentiments of the Mass as they had never been treated before. The result is a humble beautiful contemplation of the divine, invested with Beethoven's innovating, symphonic designs - one of his most unusual and touching works, and a fitting tribute to the composer himself, two-and-a-half centuries on from his birth. Greek-American conductor Peter Tiboris is at the helm of the Orchestra for a concert which also includes Beethoven's great concert aria Ah! perfido. |
