In Search of Freedom

TIM HUGH, cello
ALISSA FIRSOVA, piano

SERGEI RACHMANINOFF: Élégie from Morceaux de fantaisie, Op.3, No. 1 arr. by A. Vlasov
SERGEI RACHMANINOFF: “Oh do not sing, fair maiden” arr. by Tim Hugh
FRANZ SCHUBERT: Arpeggione Sonata in A minor D 821
ARVO PÄRT: Spiegel im Spiegel
SERGEI PROKOFIEV: Sonata for Cello and Piano in C major, Op. 11

Lincolnshire International Chamber Music Festival event 1

Royal Opera House's solo cellist, Tim Hugh, together with LICMF's Artistic Director, Alissa Firsova, open this year's festival with three composers who fled Russia to find their freedom in the West. Rachmaninoff's "Oh do not sing, fair maiden", beautifully reflects the nostalgia of a land left behind. Arvo Pärt's Spiegel im Spiegel, written just before his emigration, became one of his most popular works and reaches some unbelievably moving dimensions. Prokofiev's Sonata is packed with wonderful tunes and playfulness. At the heart of this programme, we celebrate Schubert's 225th birth anniversary with his immortal Arpeggione Sonata.

Lincolnshire International Chamber Music Festival event 2

Following the Navarra Quartet's spellbinding performance at LICMF 2021 of Schubert's Death and the Maiden, they now team up with Tim Hugh for another divine masterpiece by Schubert: his String Quintet. The first half of this concert presents one of many family compositions by Alissa Firsova together with her parents, Elena Firsova and Dmitri Smirnov. Written for the Dante Quartet and Liverpool's European City of Culture in 2008, we are taken on a ride through Dante's nine circles of Hell, the labyrinth of Purgatory and the ten heavens of Paradise. The artist Philip Firsov, Alissa’s brother, provides projections of accompanying illustrations.
