7.30pm Smith Square Hall Smith Square London SW1P 3HA Details: Web site | Hymns of Paradise Goldsmiths Choral Union Jack Apperley, Conductor Charlotte Bowden, Soprano Jeremy Budd, Tenor Affinity Chamber Orchestra Herbert Howells, Hymnus Paradisi George Dyson, Hierusalem Haydn, Little Organ Mass Brahms, Geistliches Lied Vaughan-Williams, Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis There is a close relationship between Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis and the work of Howells – Howells attended the world premiere in Gloucester Cathedral and was profoundly affected by it. Dyson’s Hierusalem is also inspired by Vaughan Williams, including similar textures and, at times, harmonic language. Brahms’ Geistliches Lied is luscious, deploying a double canon at the ninth throughout. The work is usually performed with organ, but this arrangement by John Eliot Gardiner is for strings accompaniment. The Haydn, known as the Little Organ Mass because of the organ solo in the Benedictus, is light and joyful. |
7.00pm St James's Sussex Gardens Sussex Gardens London, United Kingdom W2 3UD Details: St James's Sussex Gardens Web site £25, £20 (reduced price) | Bach - Mass in B Minor Orlando Chamber Choir London Baroque Sinfonia Lucy Goddard, director Zoë Brookshaw, soprano Jessica Gillingwater, mezzo-soprano Sebastian Hill, tenor Gareth Brynmor John, baritone J.S. Bach: Mass in B Minor Orlando Chamber Choir and Orchestra perform the magnum opus of Johann Sebastian Bach’s vocal works: the Mass in B minor. To set the Mass text, the composer compiled and arranged the best works of his career, like a curator picking from his collection the most beautiful exhibition of his life. The Crucifixus is adapted from one of Bach’s earliest cantatas, composed in 1714, while the Incarnatus est is the very last piece he wrote before his death. The instrumental scale of the Mass in B minor matches its musical ambition, combining stellar soloists, a choir (that’s us!) and an oversized orchestra featuring trumpets, timpani, a horn and an extended wind section. There’s nothing minor about Bach’s Mass but its key! |
