Brahms: Violin Concerto
Bartók: Concerto for Orchestra

Boston Philharmonic 2024-25 Season event 1

The Boston Philharmonic Orchestra's 46th season opens triumphantly with Brahms’s only violin concerto, featuring former Berlin Philharmonic concertmaster Guy Braunstein (who also opened last year's season with his memorable rendition of Elgar's Violin Concerto followed by an encore featuring his interpretation of The Beatles's "Blackbird," inspired by the death of George Floyd).

The concert concludes with Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra, a brilliant orchestral showcase commissioned by the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Serge Koussevitzky, who would have been 150 this year.

Purcell (arr. Britten): Chacony in G Minor
Elgar: Cello Concerto
Holst: The Planets

Boston Philharmonic 2024-25 Season event 2

The Boston Philharmonic Orchestra's second concert of the 2024-25 season features an all-British program, a nod to Conductor Benjamin Zander's native England and his personal connections to the composers (he studied with both Benjamin Britten and Imogen Holst, Gustav’s daughter).

For the first time ever, the Orchestra performs Benjamin Britten's exquisite realization of Purcell’s Chacony in G Minor, which pays homage to the Baroque master while infusing it with modern sensibilities.

Acclaimed British cellist Alexander Baillie, who has performed with the Orchestra eight times previously over the course of 30 years, performs next on Elgar's Cello Concerto, a poignant exploration of loss and longing.

The concert culminates in Holst's popular The Planets (which heavily influenced the music of John Williams) featuring the Radcliffe Choral Society, a woman’s chorus that will sound as if it is singing from the farthest reaches of the solar system.

Composers Concordance

On Sunday, October 6th, 2024 at 5pm, Composers Concordance presents the renowned quartet ETHEL on a program of new music including several premieres. The concert will feature Gene Pritsker's composition 'Emerging', based on music from the Native American Kiowa Tribe; Lynn Bechtold's 'The Best Things Come To Those Who Act', inspired by the life of Maria Y. Orosa (1892–1945); Sophie Dunér's ‘Kairo'; Alon Nechushtan's ‘Starless’; plus music by Svjetlana Bukvich, Dan Cooper, Lee McLure, and Dave Soldier.

Established in New York City in 1998, the string quartet ETHEL sets the contemporary concert standard: “indefatigable and eclectic” (The New York Times), “vital and brilliant” (The New Yorker). Composer performers—Ralph Farris (viola), Kip Jones (violin), Dorothy Lawson (cello), and Corin Lee (violin)—fuse uptown panache with downtown genre mashup. ETHEL has performed across the United States and worldwide; released 10 feature albums; guested on 50+ recordings; won a GRAMMY® with jazz legend Kurt Elling; and toured with Todd Rundgren & Joe Jackson. ETHEL champions the art and music of today, forging human connections across sound and style.
