Sample Note

SERGEI RACHMANINOV (1873-1943)

Symphony No 3 in A minor, Op 44

I Allegro moderato

II Adagio ma non troppo

III Allegro

Last of the great Romantics, celebrated composer, legendary pianist, master conductor, chronicleer of emotions and visions, melancholic guardian of the spirit and senses of old Russia, Rachmaninov spent his childhood by the smoky hay banks of the Volkhov river between Novgorod and St Petersburg, son of a noble, bankrupt family. At the Moscow Conservatoire (1885-92) his teachers included Taneyev (the director) and Arensky for composition; and Zverev and Siloti (his cousin, a pupil of Liszt) for piano. Prominent among his friends were Scriabin, Lhevinne, Igumnov and Goldenweiser - the inspirational fathers-to-be of modern Russian super-pianism. Depression followed by recovery, adulation and triumph, defined each of the twin periods of his half century or so of professional life. Up to 1917, he was a Tsarist composer casting his own dreams; following the October Revolution and his move to Prohibition America, a homesick emigré pianist re-creating other people's. New audiences clamoured to be entertained, New York recording bosses had to be kept happy, new repertory needed to be learnt. With survival the uppermost priority, a composing energy once flowing turned fitful.- just five major works post-1926, compared with twenty-seven (and all the songs) pre-1917. Rachmaninov's final recital was in Knoxville, 17th February 1943, playing the Chopin B flat minor Sonata, the Funeral March - of which he was history's most idiosyncratically famous interpreter. In Beverley Hills less than six weeks later he was dead, from cancer. They buried him East, by a place called Valhalla.

To his public, in his black concert tails, Rachmaninov emtombed the kind of inscrutable character you might meet in the shadow-lands of a Boris Karloff film. Even as a young man - tall, patrician-faced, stooped-shouldered - he was gaunt. He rarely smiled, his voice was deep, in the Russian way he smoked fatalistically. At the piano his quiet, unspectacular platform manner was considered impeccably correct. Neither body nor eyebrow moved, just wrists and fingers, thinly aristocratic. His hands were massive, encompassing an octave-and-a-fifth. Music, Neville Cardus was to observe, was "his instintive means of expressing experience." He believed, impassionedly, Slavonically, that it should "speak from the heart.," that it should tell of a composer's "love affairs, his religion, the books which have influenced him, the pictures he loves.... I am a Russian composer, and the land of my birth has influenced my temperament, and outlook. My music is the product of my temperament" (1941).

"Finished. I thank God!" Completed between the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini and the Symphonic Dances, the Third Symphony (Senar near Lucerne, 18th June1935-30th June 1936, rev 1938) was premiered 6th November 1936 by the composer's favourite American orchestra, the Philadelphia, under Leopold Stokowski. Three years later, on 11th December 1939, they recorded it with Rachmaninov himself, an enduring memorial to a partnership forged early in the '20s. Lingering moments of bitter-sweet sadness laced with (an almost Shostakovichian) irony and fury course through its Indian summer pages. Romantic memories contrast fragments of Orthodox chant. Its palette is sumptuous, a glowing, spontaneous banquet of nostalgic sigh and precision virtuosity. Rachmaninov was convinced of its worth. But not his critics, who complained of an apparent sterility ("a chewing over again of something that never had importance to start with"), a lack of variety, length ("would not a pair of shears benefit the proportions"), and an over-elaboration of detail. Portraying times and traditions past, its sound and imagery, its cameoed Muscovite imperialism, its "sombre, lyrical, defiant" genius (Lawrence Gilman), confirm it today as the most intrinsically "Russian" of the Rachmaninov symphonies.

Scored for triple wind and brass, percussion (including xylophone), two harps and strings, the work is in three movements, the first (in A minor) cross-referenced by a recurrent modal motto (suggestively reminiscent of Tchaikovsky's Little Russian ) heard in the brief slow introduction. The lush C sharp major middle movement, cinematically tangible, opens in vintage Rachmaninov style, with harp, horn and solo violin unfurling a theme of magical dawning and sunrise. Acknowledging familiar concerto precedent, the central section is a vigorous Allegro vivace - not quite a scherzo but turbulent enough - framed by a rocking motif interesting for anticipating the first of the Symphonic Dances. Martial rhetoric, heady seduction, fuguing battles, Dies irae tones, a delirious meeting of eyes and souls, is the stuff of the A major finale, a brilliantly consuming chapter for all its episodic construction. Maybe in life Rachmaninov cut a skeletal figure - but his music could not have been more flesh and blood.

Sample Note

LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN (1770-1827)

String Quartet No 7 in F, Op 59 No 1 (Rasumovsky)

Allegro

Allegretto vivace e sempre scherzando

Adagio molto e mesto -

Theme russe: Allegro

Darkened by Napoleon's first occupation of Vienna, 1806, paradoxically, was a year in Beethoven's life of supremely lyrical outpouring. To it belong the three great so-called Rasumovsky Quartets, Op 59, the Fourth Piano Concerto, the Fourth Symphony, the Violin Concerto - each testaments of supremacy in art that future generations, if not always Beethoven's contemporaries, were to cherish and celebrate.

The three Quartets Op 59 were commissioned by one Count Andreas Kyrillowitsch Rasumovsky, the Russian Ambassador to Vienna. Half Cossack, Rasumovsky was a colourful character whose reputation in diplomatic circles had been achieved apparently "less through his skill in diplomacy than through his lavish expenditure and his love affairs with ladies of the highest standing, not excluding the Queen of Naples" (Thayer). A contemporary (Schnitzler, 1863) reported that he "lived in Vienna like a prince, encouraging art and science, surrounded by a luxurious library and other collections and admired and envied by all; what advantages accrued from all this to Russian affairs is another matter". Beethoven, in deference to his patron, Czerny says, "pledged himself to weave a Russian melody into every quartet" - dubiously so, however, if at all, in the case of the last.

"Not for you, but for a later age" (Beethoven). From the outset the Op 59 cycle was given a hostile reception. "Perhaps no work of Beethoven's," Thayer wrote, "met a more discouraging reception from musicians than these now famous quartets". According to Czerny "when Schuppanzigh first played the Rasumovsky Quartet in F [No 1], they laughed and were convinced that Beethoven was playing a joke and that it was not the quartet which had been promised". Others found it "crazy music". The Allgemeine Musikalische Zeitung (27 February 1807), on the other hand, was more qualified, reporting that "three new, very long and difficult Beethoven string quartets ... are ... attracting the attention of all connoisseurs... The conception is profound and excellently wrought but not easily intelligible - except perhaps for the third [this evening's work], whose originality, melody, and harmonic power will surely win over every educated music lover".

Soaring in concept, commanding in sweep, a quartet where, as Basil Lam says (1975), "Beethoven finds everywhere ... a new way of writing for the four strings, no less spacious and majestic in sonority than the treatment of the classical orchestra in the Eroica ", the first Rasumovsky is made up of four imposingly imagined movements, all , uniquely for their time, in sonata-form, a severe discipline.

To early 19th century sensibility a "rock of offence" (Thayer), the first, of symphonic aspiration, is notable for the way Beethoven consciously abandons the usual repeat of the exposition; for the textural toughness and intensity of its central working-out; and for the development and character of its large-scale coda. "This strange and stupendous movement," the late Robert Simpson declared (1971), "with its vast calm fugato in the middle and its extraordinary blend of serenity and inner force, is, like all Beethoven's great conceptions, unique. In it fate does not knock at the door - it stares through the window". The complex B flat "scherzo", placed second, is a statement of often extreme tonal adventure and rhythmic ingenuity, where melody and harmony in the conventional sense are all but abandoned. Continual development and variation rather than obvious repetition or segmentation is its essence. "Crazy" indeed must it have seemed to its first listeners. Writing of it in 1859, Marx believed: "One can find no defined meaning in this dance, whose outward aspects are ever changing yet always akin; perhaps it is that this light-hearted fantasy finds in itself its own meaning and its own purpose. But it is the fantasy of an eager and sensitive spirit; joy and sorrow are reflected like sunlight and shadow flickering over a vast plain as the clouds move across the sun."

The romantically-inflexioned, elegiac F minor Adagio is a scena of inventive sonority and instrumental resource, of elegant embellishment, of harmonically-telling incident. Unlike the bright finale - a theme russe of teasing Dorian modality diatonically harmonised that fairly hurtles its way across the galaxy (taken from Ivan Prach's collection of popular Russian songs published in St Petersburg in 1790) - the message it conveys is one of deeply private contemplation, of enshrined stillness, of sepulchral shadow. Above the manuscript Beethoven wrote "A willow or acacia over my brother's grave" - curious, enigmatic words in remembrance maybe of a long-dead infant brother, of the first-born Ludwig? Who today can say ...?

Sample Note

CHARLES-VALENTIN ALKAN (1813-88)

Concerto for solo piano

from Twelve Etudes Op 39

I: G`sharp minor: Allegro assai [No 8] - II: C sharp minor: Adagio [No 9] - III: F sharp minor: Allegretto alla barbaresca [No 10]

Franco-Ashkenazi Jewish, contemporary of Wagner and Verdi, friend of Chopin, recluse, man of mystery and enigma, dreamer of the fantastic, creator of extraordinary future worlds out of antique pasts, Classical ghosts and Romantic wraiths, dedicatee of Anton Rubinstein's Fifth Concerto, Charles-Valentin Alkan stands among the mighty individual forces of the Romantic age - a (reclusive) artist in the complexity and simplicity, eccentricity and esotericism, dramatic and emotional temperature of whose music flow currents as central to our understanding of the European stage and psyche of his lifetime as anything in the oeuvre of his bettter-known contemporaries. Busoni revered him among the "greatest 'piano' composers" of all time - the equal of Beethoven, Chopin, Schumann, Brahms and Liszt - and in his historic Berlin recitals of 1901-03 defied the hostility of German critics ("preposterous French rubbish") by playing several of the Op 35 Etudes in Major Keys, the Military Caprices Op 50, and other pieces - a revival to be continued famously by his students.

Alkan may have composed almost exclusively for the piano - but his music (as Hans von Bulow recognised early on) traverses a range of sonorities, a cosmos of textural spacings and extremes, a span of melodic dialogues and chordal balances as brilliantly lit and theatrically charged in their associative imagery as anything orchestral. More than once he aspires to plains extraordinarily Mahlerian in their vision of innocence and wisdom, of the beautiful and the celestial, the pastoral, the worldly, the imploring, the grand, the bold, the bizarre.

An epic compendium of modern piano super-technique to place by the Liszt Transcendentals or the two Chopin sets, the Twelve Etudes in Minor Keys, Op 39, were published in Paris in 1857. Ingeniously incorporating a Symphony (Nos 4-7), Concerto (8-10) and Overture (No 11) together with a celebrated closing variation sequence (Le festin d'Esope ), the cycle represents, Ronald Smith believes (1987), "the most complete manifestation of Alkan's many-sided genius". Aflame with creative originality, imaginative resource and ever-expanding keyboard invention, "its dark passion," he says, "its vital rhythmic drive, its pungent harmony, its masterly construction, its occasionally outrageous humour and, above all, its uncompromising piano writing" provide us with "our only remaining evidence of a technique that caused even Liszt to feel uneasy when playing in Alkan's presence". In the long journey of its 277 pages it "charts a voyage of discovery as tortuous and craggy as a Himalayan ascent; yet he who undertakes it will be rewarded with a panorama as awe-inspiring as any to be discovered in the piano literature of the 19th century".

"Arguably the most stupendously resplendent pianistic creation of the 19th century" is how Adrian Corleonis has described the Alkan Concerto. A huge 28 minute-plus first movement, classically modelled (with intricately conceived "tutti" and "solo" textures demarcating a Prelude-Exposition- Ritornello-Middle Episode/Development-Recapitulation-Coda design). A chilling central lament of anguished dialogue and brooding recitative, of pounding hammer-blows to the heart. A stamping, boots-and-spurs finale where court and ghetto, polonaise and Jew dance, Parisian ladies and Hungarian horsemen entwine in exultant delirium. Its totality, its quasi-orchestral suggestion, its delicacy no less than its power, is quite extraordinary.
