Piccadilly Chamber Music Series

The West End’s newest chamber music series, Piccadilly Chamber Concerts returns in 2019, focusing on ‘The Great Romantics’. Each programme features a great 19th century Romantic masterpiece.

Now in its 2nd season, the 2019 series begins on March 1st with a performance of Beethoven’s highly-energised Piano Trio Op 1 No. 1 in E flat and Mendelssohn’s exquisite Piano Trio no. 2 in C minor and celebrates St David’s Day with a piano trio by Welsh composer Hilary Tann, the evocative “Nothing Forgotten”.

The distinguished welsh violinist Matthew Jones is Head of Chamber Music at Guildhall School of Music and has a large acclaimed discography with Naxos and other labels as both soloist and chamber musician.

Cara Berridge is cellist of the internationally renowned Sacconi String Quartet and is one of the leading cellists of her generation.
Concert pianist Warren Mailley-Smith became the first british pianist to perform Chopin’s complete works from memory in 2016 and is enjoying an increasingly wide following across the UK.

Audiences will be treated to an uplifting, entertaining and informative musical experience.

Staging Wagner

Anthony Ogus is a retired academic lawyer and an Emeritus Professor at the Universities of Manchester and Rotterdam. He was awarded the CBE in 2002 and, in 2007, elected a Fellow of the British Academy. In 2013 he published a book on opera-going, Travels with my Opera Glasses, and he now writes a monthly article in the Opera Now magazine.

Study Day - "Staging Wagner" by Anthony Ogus

Saturday March 2 10am – c.3pm.

The study day on "Staging Wagner" will comprise two sessions in the morning and one in the afternoon. In the first, Anthony Ogus will give a talk on the evolution of Wagner production styles. In the second and third sessions, he will introduce video extracts from some notable Wagner productions. A nominated discussant will then comment on the extracts, leading into a general discussion of them.

Gustav Mahler: Symphony No 9

The Seraphin Chamber Orchestra was founded in 2017 at King's College, Cambridge by British cellist, composer and conductor Joy Lisney. Comprising talented young musicians studying in Cambridge and guest soloists, the orchestra performs music from the rich repertoire for strings including lesser-known and rarely-performed works as well as encouraging living composers to write for the ensemble.

For this concert, the SCO is joined by leading professionals from UK and European orchestras, including Paul Barritt (guest leader of the Halle); Michael Whight (ex-principal clarinet of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra; Michael Buchanan (trombone, winner of the ARD Munich Competition and previously principal of the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester and Scottish National Opera); and Colin Alexander (cellist, BBC Symphony Orchestra)

Yale Glee Club presents Bernstein alongside The Choir With No Name

Yale University’s oldest musical organization, Yale Glee Club, heads to the UK’s capital for a joint concert with The Choir With No Name, a London choir experiencing homelessness.

The evening will be a fantastic mix of familiar favourites, including Bernstein’s Somewhere (from West Side Story arr. by Robert Edgerton), Barber’s Agnus Dei and Stanford’s Three Motets, Op. 37 alongside a scattering of folk music from North America, newly commissioned works and traditional Yale songs.

There will be a retiring collection in aid of The Choir With No Name.

On an early spring day nearly 450 years ago, a young Spanish composer wandered through Rome where he had become cantor and organist at the church of Santa Maria di Monserrato. Tomas Luis de Victoria spent 22 years in the Italian city, from 1565 to 1587, and they were productivissimo. He held a number of prestigious posts, followed in Palestrina's footsteps as Maestro di Cappella at the Pontifical Roman Seminary, and took keen inspiration from the contemporary musical styles. In return, his compositions influenced the thriving international community of composers in Rome.

Orlando Chamber Choir's programme begins with Giovanni da Palestrina's rousing motet Jubilate Deo which highlights the Renaissance master's influence on the younger De Victoria, whom he may have taught. We travel back in time to the Italian sojourns of Franco-Flemish composers Orlando di Lasso and Jacques Arcadelt. While in Rome they made their first forays into the madrigal form which, a few decades later, Luca Marenzio brought to its zenith with his chromatic style and exquisite word-painting - much to De Victoria's admiration.

At the centre of the programme are four motets by De Victoria, including his superbly-crafted twelve-part Laetatus sum and the sublime Vidi speciosam for six voice parts.

Elements of Philippe de Monte's motet Super flumina Babylonis suggest that, during his Roman years, he too was inspired by De Victoria's writing. Our journey ends with a late work by Palestrina in which a wing-flapping angel descends from heaven, and with the Introit of the profoundly moving Requiem Mass by Roman-born composer Giovanni Anerio.

On his wander through Renaissance Rome, little did De Victoria know what influence his music would have, and how it would blend with his colleagues' works into such a rich and varied programme.
