The brilliant piano music of the great Frederic Chopin has never been out of fashion since it first burst onto the international scene in the early 19th century. This music wasn’t intended for the great concert halls of today, but for the intimate setting of Parisian and London Salons of the aristocracy. This was the setting where Chopin felt most at ease and improvised many of his works for the first time.

Always Something Sings: Women's Voices Through the Ages

For Melodia’s 20th anniversary, the ensemble celebrates the victories and voices of women through time. Always Something Sings: Women’s Voices Through the Ages weaves together stories of courageous women and their achievements through musical selections that amplify their voices. Listeners will experience a journey through time with music spanning twelve centuries, from Hildegard von Bingen, a nun in the 12th century who rebelled against norms, to 21st century works by Melodia-commissioned composers Allison Sniffin and Cevanne Horrocks-Hopayian, and a New York premiere by Emily Mason. Margaret Bonds and Florence B. Price, two influential Black female composers who persevered through racial segregation and violence, are also featured in words and music. The program will also include Melodia favorites by Ola Gjeilo and Judy Collins’ rendition of “Bread and Roses,” a song that captures the soul of the women’s movement.

Conducted by Cynthia Powell, Artistic Director, with Allison Sniffin, piano and organ, Keiko Tokunaga and Jessica Park, violins, Gizem Yucel, viola, and Ani Kalayjian, cello.
