Always Something Sings: Women’s Voices Through the Ages weaves together stories of courageous women and their achievements through musical selections that amplify their voices. Listeners will experience a journey through time with music spanning twelve centuries, from Hildegard von Bingen, a nun in the 12th century who rebelled against norms, to 21st century works by Melodia-commissioned composers Allison Sniffin and Cevanne Horrocks-Hopayian, and a New York premiere by Emily Mason. Margaret Bonds and Florence B. Price, two influential Black female composers who persevered through racial segregation and violence, are also featured in words and music. The program will also include Melodia favorites by Ola Gjeilo and Judy Collins’ rendition of “Bread and Roses,” a song that captures the soul of the women’s movement.
