Songs of Farewell

The yearning and regret at parting, the optimism of new beginnings and the religious promise of an afterlife are common themes in Western classical music. In its spring concert, Collegium Musicum of London Chamber Choir explores these sensibilities – alongside the retrospective poignancy of a composer’s last works.

Choral music by a diverse collection of composers makes up an eclectic programme of memorable musical farewells, incuding works by Gibbons, Weelkes, Byrd, Purcell, Mozart and Beethoven, alongside Hubert Parry’s Songs of Farewell, the composer’s touching tribute to his pupils who were lost or wounded in the First World War.

Leading soprano Augusta Hebbert (pictured) will be accompanied on piano by CML’s musical director and conductor Greg Morris in an arrangement of Richard Strauss’s exquisite, valedictory Four Last Songs, completed near the end of the composer’s life.

Join the choir in its home – Sir Christopher Wren’s elegant church of St James Garlickhythe in the City of London – for what promises to be a moving and ultimately uplifting evening of choral and vocal favourites.

"Stunning" Classic FM

The brilliant piano music of the great Frederic Chopin has never been out of fashion since it first burst onto the international scene in the early 19th century. This music wasn’t intended for the great concert halls of today, but for the intimate setting of Parisian and London Salons of the aristocracy. This was the setting where Chopin felt most at ease and improvised many of his works for the first time.

When the Spanish and Portuguese conquistadores landed in Latin America, they cruelly earned their name, conquering the indigenous civilisations with guns, germs and steel. Throughout the 16th century, cultures clashed and slowly merged; and for all its darkness, the cloud of colonialism also rained down a resplendent musical mix which blended the wonder and wisdom of two worlds in its vibrant villancicos - Ay!

From this melting pot we pour a captivating cocktail of plainchant with percussion, rhythmical Renaissance dance and off-beat baroque with exotic embellishments - Oye! We follow the music (and the drumbeats) throughout a full liturgical year, singing you from country to country with reverberations all the way to contemporary Venezuela. At the core of our programme brightly blossoms Juan de Padilla's Missa Ego flos campi, around which scintillate the sounds of Capillas, Franco, De Zéspedes and other shining musical stars.

The church will be a parasol under which your pew shall tremble with the sun-bright colours of their polyphony - Apuntate!
