Johann Sebastian Bach: G Major Suite for solo cello
Dani Howard: Add Oil for solo cello
Leo Geyer: Unfurling for string quartet

The London-based Elmore Quartet formed in Manchester in 2017 and are embarking on a career fuelled by prizes, having recently won the Royal Over-Seas League competition, and performances at venues including Wigmore Hall. They are the first resident string quartet at Penzance MusicAbility Foundation in west Cornwall, which enables them to pursue their passion for sharing classical music with new audiences and to perform regularly in the many wonderful venues in the area.

Ludwig van Beethoven: G Minor Cello Sonata Op 5 No 2
Felix Mendelssohn: Octet for Strings

It is hard to believe that Mendelssohn wrote his amazing Octet for Strings aged just 16. It's one of the most exciting pieces to play and listen to in the entire repertoire: a work of unique invention, energy and superhuman craftsmanship. Beethoven was a great inspiration for Mendelssohn and composed several radical early works that fundamentally changed the course of music. His Cello Sonata in G Minor veers from operatic overture to turbulent waters and finally a rondo movement of inspired wit and charm.

Festival Finale

Adrian Brendel, cello

Khanh Nhi Luong, piano

Joseph Haydn: String Quartet Op 76 No 5
Maurice Ravel: 'Mother Goose Suite' for piano four hands
Franz Schubert: String Quintet in C

Haydn was the godfather and great adventurer of the classical style - he invented the modern piano trio and string quartet and taught Mozart and Beethoven. His string quartets are among the most enduringly performed and admired works of any composer. Schubert’s string quintet is widely thought of as one of the very greatest pieces of music ever written. Encompassing light and shade, sublime serenity and anguished drama, it represents one of the most acute musical representations of the human spirit. In between, Maurice Ravel’s ever popular 'Mother Goose Suite' for two pianists is a wonderful contrast, originally written for orchestra and dedicated to the children of close friends of Ravel.
